The re-organization and selection happened Tuesday at the School Board’s governance training and was presided over by Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong.
The selections are effective immediately. The interim designations will terminate on December 31, 2022. School Board elections take place in November 2022. The School Board will reorganize in January 2023 following the swearing-in of elected board members.
Clanton joined the School Board in July 2018 and previously served as its vice-chair. He is a graduate of Maury High School and a former Norfolk Public Schools administrator. He is also a graduate of Old Dominion University.
Gabriel was appointed to the School Board in July 2012 and was elected to serve in May 2016. She has previously served as chair and as vice-chair of the board. She is a graduate of Granby High School, Old Dominion University, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Clanton and Gabriel both offered thanks to the previous board chair, Dr. Adale Martin, for her service in the role.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues to place an even greater focus on becoming a peak performance governance team,” Clanton said. “We must utilize our varying backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise to provide leadership by placing focus on renewing our vision, mission, and ultimately moving the school division’s five-year strategic plan forward.”
We must work collaboratively to restore confidence in the work of the School Board and the communities we serve.”
