Next Step To Success (NSTS) is a new program geared for youth 13-16 years old in Norfolk. NSTS provides after-school and summer programming to youth participants, offering them a wide range of academic, enrichment, character education curriculum, activities, field trips and special events.

Our mission is to help youth in Norfolk build the independent, resilient character they will need to earn success and enjoy happy, fulfilling lives as adults.

Our vision is to cut the poverty rate in Norfolk by one-half over the next 10 years.

We partner with NSTS youth and their families to work with them and help ensure youth have the skills and preparation they need to succeed and break the cycle of poverty.

After School Program

The current Next Step To Success after-school program began Monday, September 20, 2021. The program offers rolling admission for youth to join any time.

Youth are picked up from their middle or high schools and transported for free on NSTS buses to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the program location. The church’s address is 6400 Newport Avenue in Norfolk.

After-school activities include homework assistance, extra-curricular clubs, visual and performing arts, and a catered dinner Monday through Thursday. Fridays are reserved for off-site activities. At the end of each day’s program activities, youth are provided free transportation on NSTS buses back to their homes.

Summer Program

The 2022 Next Step To Success Summer Camp will be June 27-August 19, from 8:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Daily activities focus on promoting each youth’s social, emotional, and educational development with a strong focus on building their skills in the areas of resilience, grit, growth mindset, teamwork, leadership, written and oral communication, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Having fun, discovering new hobbies, and making new friends are top priorities in our summer camp. We want youth to have a great time during their summer break in a safe and nurturing environment that supports their overall development. Youth will have numerous opportunities to participate in a wide variety of on-site and off-site programming including cooking classes, STEM, visual arts, wooden boat making, modern dance, photography, gardening, sports, as well as weekly field trips to colleges, cultural institutions, and other sites of interest.

NSTS provides free transportation for campers, as well as a light breakfast, lunch and snack daily.
